Tips on how to obtain actual psychological tests at York

Generally YUL does not collect commercial psychological tests (mental measurements) because they are tightly controlled by their publishers. Although the Mental Measurements Yearbooks can be helpful in identifying and reviewing commercial tests, the test contained within it are generally not accessible by undergraduates. However, there are a few ways to obtain actual tests at .

1) Directory of Unpublished Experimental Mental Measures

APA.: Washington, DC, 1974-2003. 8 vols. Call number: BF 431 D49 Scott Reference

Provides basic descriptive information about tests which appeared in scholarly psychology and education journals; “unpublished” here simply means not published commercially, and therefore generally freely available. Entries provide references to the journal source in which it was published. Use the cumulative index from the most recent volume for the entire set. There is a a separate title index next to the set on the shelf.

2) Psychology Resource Centre

Location: BSB 162B
The Psychology Resource Centre maintains a collection of 2400+ psychological tests. To see a list of tests in the Resource Centre, click here.

Please note: The Psychology Resource Centre is only open to psychology graduate students and 4th year undergraduate thesis students.

3) Compendia

Some tests have been compiled in published compendia. Many of these compendia are carried by the Library. The Psychology Resource Centre maintains an excellent online index to tests published in these compendia.
If you identify a test in a compendium, check the library catalogue to find out if YUL owns the book. Please note that some compendia consist of a combination of abstracts and fully reproduced tests. The compendia index web site indexes both. Please read the fine print on the web site for information on each compendium publication to distinguish which are full text and which are not.

Most of the information in this post is on the "Guide to Psychological Tests" handout available at the Reference Desks.
